Practically everyone either has an allergy, or knows someone with an allergy. So we should all be familiar with Big Pharma anti-histamines. What we may not be familiar with are the dangers of taking them.

You can start learning by simply reading the listed side effects, which include:

  • Drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, blurred vision, & loss of coordination – which is why they tell you not to drive or operate machinery
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Seizures
  • Hallucinations and mental disorders
  • Low blood pressure
  • Low motivation and fatigue
  • Nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, constipation, and mucus formation
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Dry mouth, nose, or throat
  • Increased appetite and weight gain
  • Emotional changes including irritability, nervousness, or excitement

Sorry, I’m starting to sound like an American drug commercial. But there is more. Studies have been done showing many long term effects of western anti-histamines not listed on the package inserts, including a 54% higher risk of dementia in older people. In fact, older hospitalized patients frequently show signs of delirium, disorganized speech, and altered consciousness.

Be careful if you have kidney or liver disease, as your detoxing functionality is already impaired, and you will experience very severe side effects. In fact, doctors are told to screen for many other conditions before prescribing anti-histamines, including diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, glaucoma, overactive thyroids, enlarged prostate or urinary difficulties, and they check women to see if they are pregnant or breastfeeding, as the anti-histamines can damage the babies.

In fact, national poison control phone lines are kept busy with calls from anti-histamine users. People take too much, combine two different brands, take them at the wrong times, combine them with other pharmaceutical drugs, or experience severe side effects.

The side effects of Big Pharma anti-histamines are not even disputed. They are well known, and well publicised, and the doctors are open about the dangers, partly because the risk of death or serious disease is high, and partly because they have no other solutions. Suffer from the allergies, or suffer from the anti-histamine side effects. They don’t care either way.

Fortunately, there are a number of natural anti-histamines. The simplest ones are water and salt. Easy to find in an emergency, and effective. Even more effective is Vitamin C. It is an amazing anti-histamine, and is so powerful that it can even reverse allergies when taking the right dose in the right manner. I actually carry some sachets of Vitamin C with me in my wallet, because you never know when you or someone else might need it.

On top of that, there are many natural herbal anti-histamines. Living here in Sri Lanka, I have personally used some ayurvedic ones in the past, but there are many other great natural herbal solutions around the world.
