VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

Over 80% of the world’s almonds are grown in California. They are exported everywhere, and not just as a raw product. They put them in cakes, coffees, almond milk, cereal, granola bars, and even skin care products. There are a lot of California almonds, and if you want my opinion, I wouldn’t touch them.

Almond crops are heavily sprayed with pesticides which are known to cause harm in humans, and that people can die from. Even the bees which are brought in to fertilise the crops each year , die at a rate of up to 25% of the colony’s population.

But that is not the reason, as of course, you could just buy organic. The problem comes from a Salmonella outbreak stemming from California almonds, where to solve the crisis in 2007, California made it compulsory for all almonds grown there to be treated before being sold.

The non-organic producers decided to slap another deadly chemical on top, Propylene Oxide, or PPO. The American cancer society knows it’s a carcinogen, the Environmental Protection Agency knows it’s a carcinogen, but like usual, if someone pays enough money, remember that California almonds are a $5.6 billion dollar industry, then it gets approved for human consumption.

What about organic? Well the Californian government forces producers to pasteurize them, which through a variety of methods, kills the bacteria, but it kills the almond too. Nutrients and enzymes are destroyed, and the nutritional value is diminished. Pasteurized nuts can no longer be activated, or sprouted, preventing beneficial nutrients from being released, and harmful toxins from being deactivated, such as anti-nutrients like phytates.

If you live in California, you can get around this by purchasing from small farmers directly, as the pasteurization laws don’t apply in those cases. There are other sources, such as imported almonds, grown abroad without salmonella contamination, and also not subject to the pasteurization laws either.

Always go organic, and unpasteurized. Not just for nuts, but for everything. For more information and recommendations on reliable unpasteurized organic almond suppliers, please visit my website at healthglade.com
