Carrageenan. The name sounds weird, and you may not have heard of it, but you would have likely eaten it at some point in your life. Carrageenan is an extract from edible red seaweed, and added to a variety of food products for gelling, thickening, and stabilizing.
It’s in alternative milks, like nut, rice, and soy, dairy like cheese, yoghurt, and sour cream, and powders like infant formula and protein shakes, sauces, shampoos, beer, toothpaste, pet food, and much more.
It’s a seaweed extract so it sounds fairly safe, and the food industry certainly wants you to believe it is. Any criticism of carrageenan is met with a ferocious barrage of retaliation and attacks, as they need it, because as it stands, they have no alternatives to carrageenan and many of their toxic products would be out of production.
They literally pay people to write fake articles declaring it safe, and that health concerns are overstated. But the science says otherwise.
One of their tactics is to claim there is a difference between food grade undegraded carrageenan, and degraded carrageenan, which is now known as poligeenan. The dangers of poligeenan are well known and not disputed, and it’s banned for use in food products. So, they try to claim it is a different product, and it is, but at the same time, it’s not.
Scientific testing on food grade Carrageenan showed that every sample contains Poligeenan. At least 5%, and up to as high as 25%. The reason for this is carrageenan degrades naturally, but other factors such as heat exposure, or exposure to acids, such as stomach acid, accelerate the process. So as soon as the food hits your stomach, it starts to rapidly degrade into Poligeenan.
Then there is the heating food factor, like the formulas, or even pizza with cheese. You can probably think of heaps of examples, but this all creates massive degredation into Poligeenan. But even if it never changed, there are plenty of studies showing that Carrageenan itself is a carcinogen, plus other studies have shown that there is no substantial difference between the two when it came to causing intestinal ulcerations and neoplasms.
Indeed, gastrointestinal distress is a common side effect, and it has been reported since the 1960s, with inflammation, bloating, IBS, all being caused, as well as the symptoms vanishing as soon as you eliminate carrageenan from the diet. It also causes many other diseases, like inflammation and ravages intestinal flora, but the most dangerous of all is colon cancer.
As carrageenan, like Poligeenan, is a carcinogen, and they both cause gastrointestinal ulcerations, the most likely place to get cancer is in the colon, at those ulcerations.
Carrageenan is definitely a food additive that should be avoided. It’s in so many things that you wouldn’t even think of, so it’s imperative that you check all food labels for Carrageenan before you buy them.
